Your friend's baby has been sleeping through since he was 3 weeks old, but after 6 months, you’re still watching every hour of the night go by. Sound familiar? Our sleep tips for babies can help you encourage your child to sleep better!
Is your little one sleeping through yet?
This may well be the most annoying question you get asked as a new parent. But rest assured, most babies don't fall asleep right away.
When they’re born, your baby can’t tell the difference between day and night. Until they are about two months of age, most babies end up sleeping most of the day, which can be up to 18 hours! Does your child sleep less or more than this? It’s not a problem! As long as he/she feels good and is developing well, there’s nothing to worry about!
Know your baby
Give yourself time to get to know your baby. Look and listen to your baby. Over time, you will recognise the signs when they’re feeling tired. Some babies touch their ears, others have a recognisable 'cry' or become restless... Take the time to observe your baby and before you know it, you’ll know when it’s time for them to have a nap.
Structure helps
Once your baby has developed a rhythm for day and night, they will be able to sense more easily what is about to happen. Their 'built-in body clock' means your baby will get into the habit of eating at 12 pm and going to sleep at 7 pm, for example. Having a good routine for the day and night will ensure that your child learns to fall asleep on their own or continues starts to sleep through.
Tip: start a regular evening ritual with Yumi Yay. The colourful night lights and fun reading books will draw you in to your child's world.
Peaceful surroundings
Although babies are hugely attracted to bright colours, it's best to avoid them in their sleeping environment. After all, they will stimulate your child's brain. Instead, choose soft, neutral colours for the walls of your children's room.
Not too hot, not too cold
The right temperature is very important for a good night's sleep. Not just for you, but for your baby in particular. Until the age of 8 weeks, the ideal room temperature is 20°C. After that, 18°C is sufficient.
Not sure if your baby is too hot or too cold? Their neck and feet are a good indicator of their body temperature.
Music
When your baby was still safely inside your womb, they heard noises all the time. This is why white noise or soft music can calm babies who find it difficult to sleep.
Going to sleep is fun
Do you feel like your baby is reluctant to go to sleep? Then try to make it a fun time. A cosy evening ritual with mom or dad will help your child feel reassured and send them on their way to dreamland.
