Bye bye beige, hello color! Why babies and children are so attracted to color

Bye bye beige, hello color! Why babies and children are so attracted to color

You may have noticed it already: you come into a toy store and your child runs to the most colorful toys. From an early age, your child is attracted to color, and preferably the brightest colors. The reason for this? Well, you'll discover it here.

From Blurry and Gray to a World of Color!

To understand your children's love of color, we must go back to the beginning: your newborn baby.

Among many other things, your newborn baby needs to develop his sight. So, it is normal that at first he recognizes your voice rather than your face. A newborn baby sees everything blurry, but after a week he can already recognize things at 20 cm. This is still only due to the contrast between light and dark. Between the ages of 3 and 6 months, your baby's vision sharpens step by step. After six months, the blurred world becomes completely sharp!

So, when does your baby discover colors? This begins after about four weeks. Red is the first color your baby sees. About a week later, blue, green, and yellow are also part of his color palette. As you can see, primary colors appeal to babies the most. Pastel shades and other colors do not interest them as much, but they do have a calming effect.

As you may have noticed, these primary colors continue to capture your child's attention later as he grows up. So prepare your home for some color 😉.

TIP: Looking for a fun colorful nightlight for your child? Belgian brand Yumi Yay's night lights are child-centric designed with four colorful animals: monkey Tika (green), bear Billy (orange), elephant Otti (blue) and bird Finn (yellow). The four soft food-grade silicone covers for the nightlights each have their own unique beautiful color and are a real hit with babies and children, among other things. You can discover the wireless night lights with timer from Yumi Yay here.

Tips to stimulate your child's sight

Your newborn baby is curious about the entire world: smells, tastes, sounds, materials, and colors! And you can help with this. We offer some tips to stimulate your baby's sight:

  • Build a visual bond
To build a visual bond, always keep your little one 20-30 cm away when you play with him or hold him. That way he can see you clearly!
  • Contrasts and bright colors
It is best to look for toys with light and dark colors. The first colors your child sees are the primary colors: red, blue, yellow, and green. Soon his four favorite colors! To help him learn to distinguish colors, give your baby books and toys in bright colors, not pastels. The Yumi Yay night lights are green, blue, yellow, and orange, but the light remains nice and soft. Ideal for the nursery or children's room!
  • Shapes and movement
Vary with toys. Look for ones with different shapes. Your child also likes to watch moving figures, so mobiles are an interesting purchase. Yumi Yay's night lights are made for children's hands. The soft food grade silicone covers are flexible, so they are both safe and fun for babies to play with.
  • Observations and tours
Your baby is fascinated by everything you engage in such as drawing, dancing, talking on the phone and brushing. As curious as he was at the beginning of his life, he looks forward to seeing new things and actions for the first time! In addition, it's always a nice idea to give your little one a tour of the house or garden.
