with these handy tools!
When children are away from home, for a night's stay or a few days at camp for example, homesickness can sometimes rear its head ... That's why we have listed some tools in this blog, to ensure that homesickness has (little to) no chance!
Tip #1: Just take 'home' with you
One of the reasons why children can be homesick is that they are away from their familiar surroundings. To counteract this, they can bring some items that they like and associate with home, such as their favorite stuffed animal, blanket and/or ... their nightlight!
The shockproof (!) nightlights from Yumi Yay can fit perfectly in the guest suitcase or bag, and thanks to their (changeable) covers, your child can choose whether Otti, Finn, Tika or Billy watch over him/her at night. A nice extra to put in the suitcase or bag are the bedtime stories by Yumi Yay. Totally 'travel proof', thanks to their compact size!
Tip #2: Discuss expectations in advance
It can be useful to discuss with the children their expectations before departure. Discuss where they are going, what exactly they are going to do there - e.g. by talking about their activities on trips, they will (hopefully) start to look forward to it - and who is going to be there. This will most likely reduce the ‘fear’ of leaving and make your child feel more in control of the situation.
Tip #3: Keep in touch with each other
Technology can be a useful tool to stay in touch when they are away from home . Just a (brief) phone call or video chat to hear how they are doing will reassure them as well as make them feel connected to the ‘home’ front. Are they at camp, and is calling not an option? Then put e.g. one or a few little notes in their suitcase or bag, with a sweet of funny message. A different, less modern form of communicating with each other, but with the same 'comforting' effect!
Tip #4: Encourage independence
While it is important to provide comfort and support, it is also important to encourage your child(ren)'s independence. That is, let them make their own small decisions and solve small, simple problems on their own. This will make them feel stronger and more confident, and reduce feelings of homesickness!
Homesickness is a challenging experience, but it is important to remember that it is a common experience for many children. By applying (some of) the tips above, you can help your child feel more comfortable and secure, AND therefore have a positive experience when away from home!
