Our brand, Yumi Yay, was created entirely on Belgian soil and that’s something we’re very proud of! But what’s the history of our product development? One by one, they were born from a story and an idea: bringing parents and children closer together.
The reason that Yumi Yay is so strong, is because each product was created from the child's mindset. What do children like? What do they love? What do they think about? The answers to these questions are the foundation for when we develop our products.
From initial ideas… to Yumi Yay!
The heart of Yumi Yay can be found in real families. If there's one thing they all have in common, it's a lack of time and sleep... whether that’s time for the children, time for themselves or time for each other.
As a mom or dad, of course you want to be close to your children, and that’s exactly what happens when you spend time together. And there’s no better time to spend together than an evening ritual of reading a book together before bedtime. It is moments like these that invite you to slow down and think about the day you’ve just had. And it’s also how you create a deep connection with your child.

Soft design
Of course, it’s not just how the product looks that needs to be completely tailored to children, but the design itself. We choose our materials based on softness, safety and durability. This is why our night lights are made with a (food grade) silicone cover and a bamboo charging nest. These materials are safe, sturdy and made to last for years. And of course they look super appealing to both children and parents!
Did you know... Yumi Yay night lights, unlike other lights for children, were approved as toys? Your child can be as creative as they like and take a bath with the Tika silicone cover, or use the Otti cover as a teething toy! ;-)
Animals
Children are fascinated by animals. Our animals were carefully chosen to appeal to every child, from any background. We chose animals that are recognisable to children.
When it came to choosing the traits and characters of the animals you will find in the Yumi Yay stories, we decided to take a look at totems, such as those you will find in the Scouts*. Take a look at elephants: it is in their nature to be super helpful, strong and gentle, while monkeys are lively, cheerful and caring. And so the basis for the characters for our Yumi Yay animals was laid!
Colour
Unlike other nightlights, we made a conscious decision to use colour here at Yumi Yay. Our products are made for children and we place a particular focus on vivid colours.
Many adults like pastel colours because they match their interior design, but children have a better eye for colour. So we picked striking, yet soft colours based on trend colours from the Franq colour guide.
Names
The Yumi Yay team went looking for names that sound good both at home and abroad. We went for short international names that everyone can easily pronounce.
With the Yumi Yay night lights and reading books we can provide parents with an easy way to become even closer to their little ones. Our products ensure that as a mom or dad, you don't have to think too much and can instead just enjoy the moment. So sit down with your child and enjoy a cosy moment just before bedtime or during a quiet moment throughout the day.
